One service that can often be overlooked when it comes to booking entertainment for a party or event is getting a photographer. You’ve already gotten your entertainment, picked out the cake, found the perfect space to decorate; do you really need someone else there to take pictures when you’ve got oodles of storage on your new iPhone? You may tell yourself: “Why hire someone else when I can do it myself?” Well, there are several reasons why having a photographer is a huge advantage when it comes to parties, especially if it’s a party you want to be a part of, like a child’s birthday or other family gathering. If you spend all the time and hard work planning a big bash, you want to be present. Not just “there”. Here are the five biggest reasons why you need a photographer for your next event.

  1. Being a party host is HARD.

ESPECIALLY when it comes to kids parties. You’re constantly putting out more food, giving directions to guests that can’t find the party, helping your little one with her THIRD princess wardrobe change in the last hour, and “Oh crap…where are the matches?”. When you’ve got a bunch of tiny humans on a sugar high running around, chances are you’re probably going to have your hands full already. Handling one can be a challenge, but your little one’s entire kindergarten class is invited. Not to mention any question about “where this goes” or “how you want this” is coming your way. That’s a lot of stress on a day you’ve already put so much thought and time into. If you’ve hired entertainment for the kids, you’ll have a much easier time now that the kids something to focus on, but maybe friends and family have come from way out of town. You likely want time to socialize with them too, right? If you’re still going to try to document every moment of the party behind a camera the whole time, you’re missing out on actually enjoying the party.

  1. Your friend with the “good camera” might be a bit of a gamble.

A good camera means nothing if the person behind it doesn’t know how to use it. You could hand me the world’s nicest violin, but it’s going to sound like garbage because I don’t know the first thing about playing a violin. In today’s times there are a BUNCH of free lance photographers. Some are fantastic and some are not. There are also many different types of photographers that will have a different skill set than the next. Even if your BFF is a beast at taking pictures of flowers, she may not have the best eye for taking pictures for a birthday party. For example, our photographers at Princess My Party are event photographers, meaning they know what to photograph, and how to photograph it when it comes to parties. Maybe your daughter’s best friends mom has an awesome Instagram feed and offers to take pictures for free, but you may end up with a bunch of photos of her daughter, and maybe a couple dark and blurry photos of your little one.

3 You want to be in the frame. Trust me.

You can’t be in the photos when you’re behind the camera. Sure, you can pass the camera off to grandma, but we ALL know how that’s going to turn out. You stand there for ten minutes, your cheeks are burning from smiling as she stands there trying to figure out how to work the darn thing. You settle for a blurry or dark photo and that’s just the way it goes. Now, you might be one of those people that hates getting their picture taken. That’s understandable. Most of us hate looking at photos of ourselves, but you don’t want to be left out of the picture when ten years down the line, you’re reminiscing about the perfect Saturday afternoon you spent with your little girl the day she turned five. Even if you don’t want your photo taken, I promise you, your little one will want those photos of you two together when they get older too.

  1. Candid photos are the best photos.

At all our parties, we reserve time for posed photos at the end. You know, where everyone lines up and gets their photo taken all together. Those photos are great, however you’ll probably find that your favorite photos from the day are the ones you didn’t know were taken. The genuine ones that capture the giggles and smiles that aren’t asked for. The moment where your little girl’s jaw drops when she opens the door on her birthday and her favorite princess is the whole world is standing there. When you’re at the party, enjoying those special moments, you won’t think about capturing them on a camera. Your photographer sees things that you and your guests will not. Photographers will also remember those thoughtful details you created, with an epic shot of your princess themed cake, the decorations you spent all night setting up, and even odd things like the shoes your little one was wearing. An event photographer leaves no detail undocumented. All kinds of stuff you probably wouldn’t think about taking. I remember even at my own wedding, the photographer was snapping photos of all kinds of stuff that seemed nonsensical at the time, but looking back, they’re some of my favorite photos. The odd shots are what will jog your memory when the memories start to fade.

  1. Photos last forever.

After the candles are blown out, the guests have said their goodbyes, and the tablecloths are littered with frosting and food crumbs, all you have are the special memories from a very special day with the people you love. Years later, when memories aren’t as crisp as they are know, you’ll have your photos. Because there will never be a day exactly like that day. Your child, in that exact moment, with those people that made them happy, and all the smiles and giggles from one of their favorite days, captured to remember forever. It’s a special time that both you and your child will appreciate remembering later on. So don’t stand back and watch the day happen. Be present, make memories, and leave the picture-taking to someone who will capture that day just the way you experienced it.
